Lightswitch Man

Intro:
This is my first project in Unreal that I created to put all the skills I've gained from 2 months of self-teaching myself in Unreal Engine 5.

Process:
I began building out a scene in Unreal using premade assets but tweaked some of the materials and created material of my own using Unreal Engine's Blueprints. Then I added in a character and some motion capture and rendered out different shots of a few animations from various angles and edited them together with a song to create a short little music video.

Before producing this video I made a few test projects to really understand the workings of Unreal Engine 5. I come from an Autodesk Maya background making 3D animations, so moving to a game engine was a whole new world for me.

Here is my Unreal Learning Process!
The videos go left to right, in a zig-zag motion. The first video is me learning how to render out video from Unreal while comparing baked textures to the new Nanite rendering. Then in the next video, I build out a scene on my own just using random assets I found on Quixel and some fire VFX in Unreal.

The last two videos show me experimenting with a pre-made scene where I had to mess with the textures a little bit as well as learn more about lighting and reflection captures in Unreal, as well as learn to incorporate motion capture and render that animation.

Reflection:
Learning Unreal actually proved to be really fun! Especially since I was so passionate in being able to bring these cool ideas, colors, and motion into reality, virtual reality of course, but still something that I can see with my own eyes.

It was crazy to think that I could get this far after two months since it took me an entire semester just to be able to do all of this in Maya, but I guess that's the magic of virtual production, it's really convenient and takes little time once you understand how to do it once!

I plan to keep creating virtual sketches/videos like this one to really hone my experience with these tools and concepts and hope that I can eventually be good enough to make cooler stuff in the future!
